October 13, 2012, Saturday
IPOH: OCBC Bank (Malaysia) Bhd recorded a growth of more than 20 per cent in its small and medium enterprises (SMEs) loan sector for the first six months this year.

Its director and chief executive officer, Jeffrey Chew Sun Teong, attributed the growth to the efforts taken by the bank to offer loans to qualified SMEs and individuals with clear plans for the usage of their funds.

“It is not surprising as the segment has remained an important segment for us,” he told reporters following the launch of the renovated Ipoh branch OCBC Bank building in Jalan Dato Maharajalela here yesterday.

As for consumer banking, Chew said both the loans and deposit segments also registered more than 20 per cent growth, with strong performances seen in various areas including an increased number of premier banking clients and strong performances in the housing and mortgages divisions.

On the ‘new look’ for the OCBC Bank here, which underwent renovations costing RM16 million, he said the move was an important part of the bank to continue to transform to provide enhanced services for its customers.

The bank has been operating here since 1933. Chew said OCBC has also todate upgraded more than half of its 31 branches nationwide.

On its business in Ipoh, he said the branch would continue to cater to the needs of individuals and businesses in the state especially Perak’s plans to develop its tourism sector.

He said the bank would also be a partner in the economic development of Ipoh and towards this, it would be financing the setting up of an international chain hotel, Hotel Ibis Styles Ipoh, which is under the Accor Group.

The hotel is expected to be ready in 2013. In conjunction with the opening of its ‘new look’ Ipoh branch, the bank is also inviting customers to its three-day carnival which took off here yesterday.

Various promotions and activities would be held for the three days including special rates for fixed deposits as well as gifts for the opening of new accounts.
